QUINE'S REJECTION OF AN ATOMISTIC NOTION OF COGNITIVE MEANING AS A BASIS FOR ANALYTICITY

QUINE'S REJECTION OF AN ATOMISTIC NOTION OF COGNITIVE MEANING AS A BASIS FOR ANALYTICITY

ABSTRACT. Quine's behaviourism requires the linguist's theoretical constructions to be justified on the basis of objective evidence. The available paradigms in the case of definition either assume prior synonymy relations or else have nothing to do with meaning. No comparison between hypotheses about beliefs and hypotheses about meaning is possible (it assumes an analytic/synthetic distinction).
