ABSTRACT. Stravinsky sees himself as fully separated from the past, studying it not to continue it but to borrow from it piecemeal for his own purposes. A musical style is a body of musical products that share certain auditory features in common (Elliott). Schönberg views atonal composition as an inevitable development of western musical practices. Cage states that the special function of electrical instruments will be to provide "complete control of the overtone structure of tones and to make these tones available in any frequency, amplitude, and duration."
