The Jane Eyre Pattern

The Jane Eyre Pattern

ABSTRACT. In the present paper, the attention is focused on the psychology of relationships: there is always a game of power to some extent in a love relationship and passion and tragedy are always linked. Lovers always have something destructive about them, according to psychoanalysis. In relationships, we always tend to repeat a similar pattern, a reading which is applied to Mr. Rochester’s character and his relationships which will probably end up similarly, in a tragic way, with Antoinette’s madness and finally Jane’s madness, as suggested by the screening after Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. The paper seeks to explain the cultural phenomenon of taking over a story over and over again by using theories such as cultural memory and translation. pp. 31–34

Keywords: Victorian; Modernism; rewriting; intertextuality; cultural memory; translation
