UNEMPLOYMENT DYNAMICS IN THE U.S.

ABSTRACT. The purpose of this article is to gain a deeper understanding of the tremendous rise of unemployment in the U.S., the changing composition of the labor force towards more educated workers, and cyclical declines in employment. The theory that I shall seek to elaborate here puts considerable emphasis on changes in the labor market, structural causes of increased unemployment, and major factors causing the rise in unemployment that occurred during the recent recession. pp. 32–37
