ABSTRACT. What is communication? We usually think of communication as words. But human beings also communicate aesthetically, through form and pattern. Among the most powerful forms of such communication are cities. Cities have distinctive and characteristic shapes and configurations (visual, tactile, aural, etc.). Cities also because of this have a great impact on human knowledge and creation: on what and how their denizens understand and think. The essay reflects on this and the contribution of Robert Park and the Chicago School of Sociology to clarifying the role of the city as a means of communication, cognition and creation. pp. 112–122
