RATIONALE FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION IN AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOLS

RATIONALE FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION IN AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT. The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, and with that comes the need for a curriculum that prepares students for today’s world. The skills needed for success in this century have changed from previous generations. Students need to graduate high school with a greater understanding of the world they enter, and the concept of global citizenship education provides a necessary lens for students to be introduced to the challenges and opportunities involved in globalization. By examining the meaning and influence of internationalization and globalization, I will propose that it is vital for students to graduate high school with the knowledge of what it entails to be a “global citizen.” Included in this study will be a rationale for teaching global citizenry and a proposed course syllabus for a secondary level globalization course. pp. 37–46
